wax record workshop
The workshop begins with a brief history of recorded sound and in particular the development and evolution of vinyl records.
Participants then use a turntable as a drawing tool to create a personalised record sleeve using various mediums and techniques. Then, using our DIY sound Lathes they carve frequencies into blue wax discs. The blue wax discs were inspired by the original Edison Blues - a blue cylindrical wax record which predates the flat vinyl disc which we know today.
This workshop was originally developed for the 2019 OUTLANDS Tour - Ecstatic Material, on which we played 9 Venues in 9 Days. The 120 records made in this series of workshops now exist as a physical document of the tour, and (we think) is the first ever record release to be physically made on the road - each record is unique and individually cut by different people to create ‘THE TOUR ALBUM’. It is also completely unplayable (for now).
We have delivered this workshop at various institutions since the tour, if you would like us to run this workshop for you please get in contact.
